Goodbye....

Hey there! I guess I finish where I started…72 days ago I sat here in Costa with my head in my hands wondering how the heck I am to write a blog. Here I am 10 weeks later, and I would like to say I’ve made progress and learnt something new! Speaking of progress, this morning myself and some friends held a workshop on big data and business intelligence (not something I thought I would ever do and even more, enjoy). Go have a look at their blogs if that is something that interests you:  Rachael's Digital Economy Blogs  ,  Hazel's Digital Times  and  Rachel's Digital Economy Blogs  . I’m not sure if you remember, but I actually done a blog post on this a few weeks ago, feel free to read if you haven't already!  Big Data Blog  & if that doesn't work: https://laurlogsdigitaleconomy.blogspot.com/2023/10/big-data.html It was interesting to see the research I did for my blog, as well as the material I learnt in class and applying that to a real-li...

Big Data

Hey there!!!

We use technology every moment of every day and accept cookies so mindlessly, but do we ever stop to consider how our data is being stored? Do we even know what that means? I’ve decided to tackle it this week.

Big data are sets of information that is too big and complex for traditional data processing applications software to deal with. It consists of 3 types of data: structured, unstructured, and semi-structured data (lets not get caught on terms).

Traditionally, data was stored separately by department, which caused duplicate of files and incorrect information.  Modern storage database has helped the data become more applicable to society. It centralises the data and controls redundant data. Big Data is characterised by the 5 V’s: volume, variety, velocity, value, and veracity (see picture below).

{Fun fact: more than 97.2% of successful organisation are now investing in big data. }

One of the biggest problems with big data is the growing number of privacy concern. It is essential to minimise risk and protect sensitive data. Data owners need to stay up to date with the rapid expansion of data as well as GDPR regulations. With data being spread across multiple locations, privacy breach is a high possibility and could lose customer trust.

Data must be formatted consistently and standardised across the company. This makes it easier to process data, analyse data and store it in the database. This helps the company avoid decision making by not making decisions with incomplete data.

I believe that society is unaware of the daily consequences of the way our data is stored. The HSE cyberattack showed that over 100,000 people’s personal data have been stolen, it became evident to the general public. This caused high controversy and led to more laws and privacy regulations.

I think that we should take a moment to reflect before sharing information about ourselves and our peers! Thanks again for keeping me company 😊
