Goodbye....

Hey there! I guess I finish where I started…72 days ago I sat here in Costa with my head in my hands wondering how the heck I am to write a blog. Here I am 10 weeks later, and I would like to say I’ve made progress and learnt something new! Speaking of progress, this morning myself and some friends held a workshop on big data and business intelligence (not something I thought I would ever do and even more, enjoy). Go have a look at their blogs if that is something that interests you:  Rachael's Digital Economy Blogs  ,  Hazel's Digital Times  and  Rachel's Digital Economy Blogs  . I’m not sure if you remember, but I actually done a blog post on this a few weeks ago, feel free to read if you haven't already!  Big Data Blog  & if that doesn't work: https://laurlogsdigitaleconomy.blogspot.com/2023/10/big-data.html It was interesting to see the research I did for my blog, as well as the material I learnt in class and applying that to a real-li...

Introduction - Who am I

Hey there!

Before I start this blog, I guess I should give a little intro into who I am and why I'm here.

My name is Laura Kealy. I am 22 years old and currently in my fourth year of college and hopefully my final year. Although sometimes it still feels like I’m waiting to sit my leaving cert! My first year of college was certainly not what I had pictured. Sitting in my room staring at laptop screen. CAO results day in isolation. I got my dream course…. or did I? 😏

So why am I here, in Costa, writing a blog...why? This semester I have a Digital Economy module. If you don't know what that is, don't worry I didn't either I'm not going to bore you with the details, so have a look at this link and it will explain a bit more. What is Digital Economy?

I always had an interest in accounting, interpreting figures and make sense of numbers. In the second semester of my third year of college, we were offered the opportunity to go on Erasmus, teaching or work placement. I choose to do 18 weeks as an accounting intern with IFAC Farming and Business Accounts. These 18 weeks were really not enjoyable and where I realised office life is not for me. Since returning to college, I have run far away from the accounting stream and have decided to move to management instead.

While commencing placement, I spent the first 2 weeks in IFAC’s headquarters in Kilkenny for training induction where I learnt their internal software system – Ifac Recording System (IRS) and Client Management Systems (CMS). IRS is used for recording income and expenditure, creditors and debtors, loans, livestock, bank reconciliations and more. I also used IRS for completing manual and final accounts. CMS consisted of the client’s menu. This is the main point of contact for both employees and clients is through this system.

The move to management is a practical one as I have now decided to do my master’s in social care specialising in Intellectual Disabilities…quite the opposite of accounting.  I currently work as a Support Worker in residential community care for people with intellectual disabilities. Looking back now, I should never have taken it off my CAO form but the again “everything happens for a reason – Aristotle”.

See you on the flip side,

Laura
